Music Magazine Research- Double Page Spreads.

Double Spread Number One

The pink spray behind the main picture links to the introduction which although subtle, shows the link between the pages and makes the magazine look more sophisticated. The picture of the artist does not overlap onto the second page, yet it is clear that he is part of the article as the photo follows the same colour scheme. The pages are linked via the continuation of the background of the picture, which shows the reader that these two pages are linked. It would appeal to teenage boys because of the dramatic colour scheme. Black and white are very contrasting colours and so look very effective when used with each other. The bright pink is used to bring some colour and personality into the magazine. Although pink is stereotypically a female colour, it has been used in a masculine manner. Also, the pink is neon pink which is used to create a night club atmosphere.

Double Page Spread Number Two

The colour scheme in this magazine spread allows this double page spread to flow as the same colours are used consistently throughout the article. The faded picture on the left hand side overlaps onto the right side which allows it to flow subtly. The magazine has used two images of the artist to show that the two pages are linked. A quote from the artist is placed in between the two pages and is placed centrally, with the other text and pictures around it. Also, the quote is used in the colour which is included least so that it stands out against the black and white. The same font and style is reflected on both pages so the reader links both pages together.

Double Page Spread Number Three

The band members are all dressed in similar colours and attire to show they have a connection. The artists, apart from one are faded out, this shows the reader that this is who the article is about and what band they are a member of so people know exactly who they are. A quote is highlighted in black to make it stand out against the white background which is a simple yet effective technique. The continuation of the white background is a simple and sophisticated way of showing the two pages are linked. The text is small in comparison to the image so that no attention is drawn away from the artist. The magazine have linked the article together by overlapping the picture onto two pages and by incorporating the colours of their clothes into the article.

Music Magzine Research- Contents Pages.

Contents Page Number One
Rock Music

"Kerrang!" have decided to go for a bold, dramatic black, yellow and white colour scheme. the black and white is a neutral colour scheme and so will appeal to both males and females. The yellow has been used to highlight important text, this adds a subtle yet effective splash of colour to the contents page, which keeps the reader interested. "Kerrang!" have also crammed their contents full of pictures of bands, which also adds colour to the magazine and gives the reader an insight to who and what can be found on which page. The title of the page "contents" contrasts to the rest of the page as it has a black background and yellow font. This magazine has cleverly used colour to allow certain information to stand out. Yellow is also a neutral colour so this magazine will appeal to both males and females. The same font has been used throughout the front cover (previously analysed) which establishes brand identity and so it will be easily recognised.

Contents Page Number Two
Indie Music

NME, (previously analysed) have also decided to go for a subtle, sophisticated look by using black and white colour scheme, with occasional red, to bring some colour and personality to the magazine. To advertise brand identity, the same font has been used throughout and also, the magazine has placed their masthead on the contents, just to drill into the reader what magazine they are reading. The contents has been split into categories to make it easier for the reader to find what they are looking for. The categories are clearly seen because they are contrasting; the colours are inverted and the text is in capital letter, which immediately makes it look different and eye catching. NME have also used effective pictures as they are photos of artists in action, which will inspire the reader to go and see their favourite bands live.

Contents Page Number Three
R'n'B Magazine

This R'n'B music magazine, "Vibe" have gone for a neutral colour scheme as it looks subtle and effective. The headline "Contents" is big, bold and contrasrs against the dark background. The image used is of an artist in a sexual position, which makes women want to aspire to be her and makes men attracted towards her and so are intruiged to read about her. The artist subtly has her legs in a "V" shape, which is the symbol for the magazine; this subconciously allows the reader to make a connection with the artist and the magazine. The logo for the magazine "V" is washed out in the background, because this is barely seen it is clear that this is a well known magazine and so does not need to advertise as much. The layout of the title "contents" has been broken down into smaller chunks and seperated; this gives the magazine a more youthful and casual and may therefore attract a younger audience.

School Magazine Research- Contents Pages

Contents Page Number One

The font for this magazine is bold and informal, so it is clear that the audience for this magazine is the pupils. Although the colour scheme is blue, which is classified as a boys colour, this magazine look quite feminine due to the fact that there is flowers and crowns in the background. The bright blue colour gives the magazine a sense of brightness and happiness. In the background also there is aspiring quotations such as “be the best you can be!” and “its up to you!” which is raising the moral of the students, which is encouraging the positive attitude. The photos are stacked upon each other and are crooked which again links into the feel of the magazine being informal and appealing to the pupils. The pictures chosen are presumably of pupils doing fun activities and they are all smiling. The bright blue colour gives the magazine a sense of brightness and happiness. In the background also there is aspiring quotations such as “be the best you can be!” and “its up to you!” which is raising the moral of the students, which is encouraging the positive attitude.

Contents Page Number Two

The title “contents” is big and stands out from the rest of the page, however, the remaining text is small and so quite hard to read. The subheadings on this page allow the reader to find what they are looking for easily. This contents page has a whitewashed image as the background so that the dark text is clear and bold. The theme of this contents page links in with the theme of the magazine as it is old fashioned. The corners of the magazine have little patterns on them which makes the magazine instantly more feminine. The image in the background is an image of the pupils in action in the school to remind the reader that it is a school magazine and it is also incorporating school morale and spirit.

Contents Page Number Three

This school has used bright, bold colours as the background to allow it to stand out and make the magazine seem happy, which will raise the readers mood. The images of the pupils looking happy will raise school morale and spirit and it is clear that the target audience for this magazine is the pupils as the text is bold and informal. Also, the title "contents" is colourful and contrasting to the rest of the page which allows it to be clearly identified and brings more colour to the magazine. The same font has been used throughout the page to show consistency which brings a subtle sophistication to the magazine and also shows that it has been cleverly thought out. The name of the magazine, "Challonerchats" is shown behind the contents to remind the reader that it is a school magazine.

School Magazine Research- Front Covers

Front Cover Number One

I think that the simplicity makes this magazine all the more effective. There is no long list of what's inside, neither lots of different pictures; it has chosen one picture of a pupil and her art work as the main feature and by doing this, the reader's attention is focused on the main article. Also, by having the pupil by her art work, it allows the reader to see exactly who's it is and so can feel inspired by their fellow colleagues.

The colours used in this magazine are warm, vibrant colours, which allows the magazine to stand out. The magazine also seems more happier due to the fact that the colours are bold and the fact that the girl is smiling, which is encouraging to the reader.

The title of this magazine is larger than any other text on this page and it also is a darker, duller colour to that of the whole magazine, because of this however, it stands out and is a reminder that it is a school magazine. The text of the main article "Artistic Talent" is in much brighter, lighter colours and so contrasts against the dark background. The word "Talent" is larger than the rest and is striking and is raising student morale. Another word that is set out from the rest is the word "success" in the school slogan. This again, is to lift the student morale and to give the feeling of a happy, successful school.

Front Cover Number Two

It is clear that this magazines' target audience was the pupils at this high school as they have made the magazine seem "young" by using a variety of colours and a random pattern. The images used are of pupils doing activities to show high participation and spirit.

This magazine has chosen not to put any text on the cover of their magazine, apart from the name of the school, and the school motto which looks very effective as it draws the reader in. Although the text colour is similar to that of the background, the thick black outline does a simple yet effective job of allowing the title to be clearly read.

The magazine would appeal to both males and females due to the fact that the colours used are mainly unisex and although some of the images are of a female orientation, a male aspect has also been considered in the design.

Front Cover Number Three

The target audience for this magazine is the pupils as the font for the title "fly" is round, curvy and fun. The colours used, although neutral seem to appeal to feminine audience as the articles are aimed at females- "10 ways to customise your boring school uniform". the image of the female student on the front cover also suggests a feminine audience. The pupil looks happy and her uniform seems casual yet smart, which may intrigue the reader as they too, will think they can become happy and smart too. The image used in the background is incorporating the school into the magazine, as a reminder that it is a school magazine, however, I personally believe that this magazine has incorporarted too many colours into the design- especially with the background.
